We are pleased to welcome you to MusicPublisherCanada.ca – the online home of the CMPA. We hope that our web site will act as a tool to help educate the public and people within the music industry of the work and contributions of music publishers.
Five hundred years ago, the invention of the printing press made the creation of music folios possible, and music publishers became the driving force behind bringing music to the world. Later, long before the phonograph, music publishers saw the need for printed music, and as motion pictures, sound recording and radio arrived, music publishers embraced each innovation as an opportunity to promote music and generate revenue...not just for music publishers, but for music creators and songwriters. In today's digital world, music publishers continue to bring music to the public, and remain at the centre of the music industry, developing and supplying the essential ingredient of the music business...the song.
Music publishers:
- Invest in the creation of music.
- Develop and mentor songwriters and music creators.
- Generate income for publishers and music creators by promoting songs to recording artists, film and television and other users of music.
- Collect, manage, administer and distribute income generated by performances, reproduction and every other use of the music and songs in their control to songwriters and music creators.
- Protect the rights of songwriters and music creators.

We hope you will enjoy and benefit from MusicPublisherCanada.ca. We welcome your feedback and if you are a music publisher or a music student we encourage you to join our community of music publishers and become a member of the CMPA.

The CMPA Board of Directors approved the following statement of values on December 15, 2009.
Statement of Values
for Publishers
We strive to
demonstrate the following values in our relationships with writers,
collectives, music industry stakeholders, government, clients and other publishers:
Honesty. Misrepresentation is not only unethical, it is inefficient. We will deal in facts to the best of our ability, willingly identify what we don’t know, and make our best efforts to find the correct answers.
Transparency. We will endeavour to provide complete, clear documentation for all of our business dealings when it doesn’t violate the privacy of our partners and clients, or expose proprietary competitive information. We will demonstrate willingness to provide further explanation wherever possible, recognising that our business generates a lot of detailed, complex information.
Fairness. We recognise that ultimately the best business arrangements are those where everyone feels they have been treated fairly. Fairness is a necessary component in the creation and continuation of the long term business relationships upon which the music publishing industry is built.
Timeliness. We are committed to regular reviews of our systems and processes to ensure that we demonstrate respect by both responding to requests and inquiries and by providing scheduled and necessary reports and documentation quickly and accurately.
Embracing change. We believe we need to focus on the realities of the new industry and how opportunities will emerge from those realities, while protecting the rights of music creators and their partners to be fairly and effectively compensated for their work.
